Electricity Supply Industry Expert Panel | Revised timelines for final report

Revised timelines for final report

The Chair of the Electricity Supply Industry Expert Panel, Mr John Pierce, announced today that the Panel had revised the timelines for its Review of Tasmania’s electricity industry. Following discussions with the Government, the Tasmanian Liberal Party and the Tasmanian Greens, the Final Report will now be submitted to Parliament before 31 March 2012.

Mr Pierce said that the Panel has made very substantial progress on its work program, and is currently preparing the Draft Report, and a number of detailed supporting papers.

"The Draft Report will deal with the Tasmanian energy sector’s past, present and future. We have obtained and analysed key source documents as well as financial and performance information spanning the past 8 years." Mr Piece said.

Mr Pierce commented that the Panel is seeking to clearly explain the case for, and consequences of, energy reform in Tasmania. Accordingly, the Panel has undertaken very detailed analysis of the consequences of reform options.

"We think it is very important for us to expose our analysis, findings and reform concepts to interested parties and give them sufficient time to undertake their own analysis. We have requested an extension of our timelines to ensure there is sufficient time for effective engagement with interested parties on the Draft Report, and for the Panel to consider the views and comments provided to it through public hearings and in submissions before producing a Final Report for Parliament." Mr Pierce said.

The Panel’s revised timelines will see:

  • Its Draft Report delivered in mid-December;
  • public hearings in relation to the Draft Report held in early February;
  • submissions on the Draft Report to be received by mid-February;
  • the Panel’s Final Report submitted to Parliament before 31 March 2012.

"I have personally met with the Premier and Treasurer Lara Giddings, the Liberal Energy Spokesperson Matthew Groom and Greens Energy Spokesperson Kim Booth to explain the progress we have made. The Panel requested a change in the date for the Final Report and today received confirmation from the Treasurer that our Terms of Reference have been amended accordingly." Mr Pierce said.
